In the plumbing industry, you’ll find many types of valves. Each of them has its ultimate goal, such as flow control, temperature control, shut-off, etc. We will explain an important and regular type of valve named the angle valve. So, what are we waiting for? Let’s get started.

What Is An Angle Valve?

The angle valve is a mechanical device or valve used to regulate and shut off the water or fluid flow in residential plumbing and sometimes in industrial pipelines. It’s a very effective valve for controlling and stopping the water flow in extreme situations. It is also known as an angle stop valve for the shut-off characteristics.

Functions Of An Angle Valve

As you already know, this valve will allow you to direct and stop the water flow whenever you want. Also, it could have some impact on the temperature as well. However, the older versions may require multiple times of rotations for a complete shut-off… which is very risky in case of an emergency. The latest version of angle valves needs a quarter or half turn to make it happen for you.

This proficient valve comes in various shapes, sizes, and types… such as angle stop, straight stops, multiple ways and handles, and more. You only need to scope your application and the pipe sizes to grab the suitable one. In addition, you may need some basic knowledge of its parts. A simple discussion of the common parts of an angle valve is given in the following.

Angle Valve Components

Almost all types of angle valves have the same elements. First of all, there’s a rotary handle at the top that allows you to operate the valve. This handle is connected to a stem inside the valve. Further, the steam (which has some threads underneath) runs inside the valve and connects to a disc at the bottom. Also, there’s an O ring that provides a better seal. Lastly, the valve body has two ports: the below one is the inlet, and the sided one is the outlet.

The working principle of an angle valve is as simple as the faucet in your washbasin. Just turning the handle will close or open the water flow. That means anyone in your family, including the children, can use this valve easily.

Why And Where To Use

An angle valve can efficiently save you from extreme disasters in case of bad leakages or bursts. Also, if you want to repair or upgrade any appliance… there is no need to cut the water through your entire house plumbing system. Then angle the stop valve to stop the water flow of that line and repair it.

The best part about this valve is that it is suitable for any application requiring shut-off, flow control, temperature, and pressure control. Examples include your shower room, toilet, kitchen sink, wash basin, washing machine, water purifier, and more.

These are just examples of home appliances, but you can also use angle valves at the industrial level. However, for industrial operations, ensure the valve is completely reliable for the safety of your application.

How To Choose a Suitable Angle Valve

Choosing the right-angle valve is not that difficult if you know where you want to use it. All you need to do is consider these selection criteria

Design: The design of this valve depends on the manufacturer and the place where you’ll use it. Select an eye-catching method if you will use it in your home.

Types and Operation: The type and mode of operation can vary depending on the application. Available options are angle stop, compression angle, angle ball, pex angle, multi-turn, half turn, quarter turn, 2-way, 3-way, and much more.

Choose the one that fits your needs.

Material: Different metal materials are used to make different parts of this valve—for example, brass, zinc alloy, stainless steel, copper, and plastic, among others. However, brass is the best material for the body and cartridge. And zinc alloy or stainless steel is great for the handle.

Surface Finish: Chrome plating, nickel plating, and polish are available. Chrome plating suits almost all environments, but you can also have something that suits your place’s theme.

Size: The most common size is 1/2″ X 3/8″. Determine and match it with the pipe of your application. If it requires any other sizes, ask your manufacturer for this.

Pressure Rating: This valve can withstand pressure up to 12 bars, which will be good enough to handle the pressure of the home water supply. However, you may have to think a little more for use in the industry.

Temperature range: Temperature endurance ranges from -10°Cto 130°C. It’s again enough for home appliances but may need more for some applications at the industrial level.

How To Install An Angle Valve

From Ninad Naik

This article’s purpose of the post is to give you all the helpful information about angle valves. So far, you’ve learned how and where to use it and how to choose it. So, now it’s time to learn how to install the angle valve to start using it. Let’s do it, then.

You’ll need the Angle Valve, 2 wrenches, and a tubing cutter to install. Next, follow these instructions step-by-step to install an angle valve:

1. Let’s assume you will install the valve in your shower room. So, go to the shower room and all the necessary tools and find the copper pipe the plumber left for angle installation.

2. Sometimes, this pipe comes way further from the wall. You want to cut it off a bit if it’s larger than two inches outside the wall. Pick up the tubing cutter and cut the pipe at the two-inch edge from the wall.

3. Insert the compression nut and the brass washer into the pipe.

4. Time to place the valve. To do it, insert the valve inlet into the pipe and gently push it. After that, attach the compression nut to the valve threads and make it hand-tight.

5. Finally, hold the valve with a wrench in one hand. And tighten the compression nut with the other twist in the other hand.

And guess what? The installation is done; congrats. You can start using it now by attaching the shower hose to the valve outlet. However, if you see any leaks, tighten the compression nut further, and it’ll be good to go.
