What is a Foot Valve?
A foot valve is a specialized non-return check valve placed at the bottom of pipelines or in a pump suction. It is known as a “well-pump foot valve.” The main function of a foot valve is to prevent water from flowing backward. An electric pump is used to move water from a lower end to a higher end. After turning off the pump, gravity may cause the water to flow in the opposite direction.
A foot valve can stop this backflow. When the pump stops, the valve keeps the liquid trapped in the suction pipe. The foot valve is opened by suction when the pump restarts. The intake side of the valve has a screen to keep larger debris from entering and damaging the internal components.
